Somnigroup International, Inc. was formed in 2025 when Tempur Sealy International, Inc acquired Mattress Firm Group Inc. and changed its name to Somnigroup International. Tempur Sealy International, Inc. was formed when Tempur-Pedic International, Inc. acquired Sealy Corporation on March 18, 2013 and subsequently changed its name. The U.S. Tempur business was originally founded in 1992 after nearly a decade of research and development of a foam product formulation originally designed for use by NASA. The Sealy business was originally founded in 1881 in the town of Sealy, Texas when Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder, crafted the first cotton-filled mattress. The Company became publicly traded on December 18, 2003 as Tempur-Pedic International, Inc. with the ticker symbol “TPX”. When the Company was renamed Somnigroup International in 2025, it changed its ticker symbol to "SGI”.

In the 1960’s, NASA scientists began developing a new material to absorb the G-force of astronauts traveling into space. They successfully created a groundbreaking viscoelastic“slow spring-back foam” designed to cushion astronauts aboard space shuttles. Swedish scientists later spent nearly a decade and millions of dollars of research to perfect the material for consumer use, which will then be discovered by Tempur-Pedic® founder Bobby Trussel.

In 1998, Tempur-Pedic® was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame and earned the NASA® Certified Space Technology Seal, recognizing that the company's underlying product technology was derived from the United States' efforts and experiments in space.
